A little project

I found one! I didn't think I would, but I have found a writing bureau that I actually think I can do up myself. Thanks to Vintage Norwich, I found the most amazing antiques and flea market on Saturday. It was huge, the ground floor was full of beautiful furniture, I even eyed up a piano. Seriously, I have never played a piano in my life. I'm on the hunt for a pink or blue typewriter (one of my 30 before 30) and although they didn't have any they did have loads of typewriters and I will be sure to visit regularly and keep my eyes peeled. They also had loads of vintage cameras, including an old Polaroid. It was only £12 but then I figured I'd probably not be able to get film, or it would cost a fortune.

Whilst wandering around I spotted a few writing bureaus. Some were lovely but extremely expensive, others were okay but not really what I was looking for. Plus they were all averaging at around £80 and considering I want to paint it a pretty colour, and could potentially mess it up, I didn't want to spend as much as that.

Then I came across this ...

At first, I thought it wasn't quite what I wanted. It wasn't the classic writing bureau I'd been thinking of, with drawers and little shelves and cubby holes inside. So I left it. Then about half hour later I went and had a second look. I figured, because it didn't have the big drawers, it would actually fit into my little room a lot better. And I quite liked the fact it was a bit different.

It's not in a great state. At first glance you're probably thinking it looks great, but the paint job done on it is terrible. They've just painted over the top of varnish so the paint just flakes off. It was obviously dark brown and they've painted it white to help them sell it. In a way it would have been easier if they'd left it, but then perhaps I wouldn't have been drawn to it. There is also supposed to be a back panel and the inside shelving is very wobbly.

On a plus note, it still has the key. And I haggled. Yes me! I've never had the confidence before but I actually wasn't prepared to pay £55 for it. I'm going to have to spend at least £20 on the paint, primer and wax. So I paid £40 for it. I was pretty pleased with that.

So I spent yesterday, sat in the sunshine, sanding. I knew it would take me some time, but man it is actually going to take me forever! I managed to get the shelf done and the front of the door done, including taking off the strange embellishments, in about 2 hours. But I'm up for the challenge. I'm pretty sure I'm still going to paint it white, but perhaps with pink on the inside. And I'm going to buy some pretty wallpaper and make a new panel for the back.

My first restoration project. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes.
