I went to see this movie a couple of weeks ago now and it rocketed up to my top 5 movies of 2011. In fact, I think it's safe to say it's in my top two.
When I originally saw the movie posters in the cinema I really wasn't interested in seeing it. I didn't really pay any attention to the posters and it could quite easily have passed me by. However, after a while rumours were floating round that it was pretty good. I still wasn't convinced, I'd seen the trailer and it wasn't doing anything for me. But I'm a sucker for a movie that slowly builds up an awesome reputation so a girlfriend and I thought we'd give it a go.
Popcorn at the ready. Pre-warned by my friend that the reviews were saying 'it wasn't a chick flick,' I didn't quite know what to expect. The very first scene and we were faced with some pretty rampant sex. Now I'm no prude, but throw it at me without warning and I feel a little bit edgy. The feeling took me back to when I watched 'Away We Go' for the first time. If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean. In fact the main actress in that film is the Bride in this one. I digress - my point is that this first scene put me off a bit. And I wouldn't say I was loving the film until about half an hour in. I wasn't really feeling the main character and it felt a little lacklustre. That's until the bridal shop scene. Again, at first I was like 'I really don't want to laugh at this.' It felt over the top and my inner prude was kicking in. But then came a turning point, if any of you have seen the film it was the point where she is in the middle of the road. I could not contain my laughter it was that funny. Yes I am going to be that cryptic as I cannot recommend this film more and you should go and see it now!! Anyway, from that point on I loved the entire movie. The friendships between the girls made me long to live near my girly school friends again. I miss them. Chris O'Dowd is just adorable in this. I have a love for him anyway because of the IT Crowd, but he really is perfect in this. And it's very funny. By the end I adored Annie the main character, I need an Annie in my life. All my Annie's either live in Quatar or back home :(
And the reviews were wrong, this is most definitely a chick flick. But one that I know any guy would enjoy watching. I guess the point is blokes shouldn't be put off by the title. The guy behind me was guffawing like a loonatic the whole way through.
Best chick flick in a long time. Top 2 movie for 2011.
My rating ~ 5/5
