Two weeks tomorrow I will be taking part in the Cambridge Spartan Sprint. A 5 km obstacle course designed by some crazy people and a Royal Marine.
I have to say the more I watch this video the more I'm scaring myself. I'm not even sure why I agreed to do it. I don't do running and I certainly don't do chin ups. I think mass peer pressure had something to do with it, and alcohol. Getting me to shake on it when I've had a few too many is not fair I tell you. Not fair!
On 24th July myself and three friends will be heading to Cambridge to take part in this crazy event. I signed up to it about six weeks ago and thanks to the iPhone app Couch to 10k, I actually think I'm going to be able to run the whole thing. I'm not exagerating when I said I don't do running. I have NEVER enjoyed running outdoors, ever! But this app is amazing. The main aim seems to be to get you out and about and exercising for an hour or more. Week one starts with 30 seconds running and four and a half minutes walking. I am now on week six, running for three minutes, walking for two and on Wednesday I did nearly six miles. It felt great and I could definitely keep running for way longer than three minutes. If any of you have an iPhone, have thought about starting running, thought that perhaps you'll never be able to do it, or gone out to hard on your first session and hated it, this app is for you. I can't praise it enough. I am throughly enjoying it, my clothes are fitting better and it's such a cheap way of shaping up. I think the app cost me £1.59. There is also a couch to 5k version.
Intially I thought I wouldn't do the event for charity because I figured people would think it was too easy, and not support me. But then I thought, actually this is a really big deal for me. Yes I do swimming events all the time, but that's because I'm a swimmer, and I'm good at it. This event is going to push me way out of my comfort zone. I'm still not convinced I'm fit enough, I definitely do not have the upper body strength for some of the obstacles, and I'm going to get seriously dirty. Until six weeks ago I'd never really done any running before and now I'm planning to run a 5 k. And not just run a 5 k, but do a crazy obstacle course along the way too. My friend Lisa and I have made a pact that we'll stick together for the whole thing, we can help each other over the obstacles that way.
We've decided to raise money for Help for Heroes. This great charity supports members of the Armed Forces that have been wounded fighting for their country. My friends Adam and Sam have said that if we manage to raise over £200 they'll dress as Spartans for the race. I would love to see that. Our fundraising page can be found here:
I don't mind if you don't want to donate, but please check out the page and have a read about the charity. It really is a great cause.
And above all else, wish me luck. I am seriously going to need it!

Is expecting a sexy Spartan to be waiting at the finish line too much to ask? Yes! That's a shame.
I know these races originated in the States, so has anyone done one before? Have any tips for me?
